Set in the wilderness of the Midwest after the American Civil War, Thomas Dawson (John Wayne) starts from scratch with the help of his adopted son Matthew (Montgomery Clift) and his sidekick Groot. After 14 years of hard work, he finally established his own ranch on a prairie in Texas, USA. Because of the economic depression in the south, Thomas decided to drive more than 10,000 cattle from the ranch to Missouri in the north for sale. He gathered his men and horses and made full preparations. This group of western cowboys drove a large number of cattle and started this journey of thousands of miles. This difficult and dangerous journey made the cowboys more and more tired, and it also made the rancher Thomas more stubborn and strict, and gradually lost his support. Finally, Matthew took the lead in rebelling, and the other cowboys followed suit. After leaving the wounded Thomas in place, the large force headed in the other direction.
