剧情梗概：
他HaroldCrick（威尔法瑞尔WillFerrell饰）是一个国税局的审计员，每天过着极具规律性的单调生活，一把旁白的声音却打破了这一切他发现耳边常常响起某个人的说话，她能洞悉自己每日的生活规律，甚至能预测他不久将来的死去，他深深惶恐。她KarenEiffel（艾玛汤普森EmmaThompson饰）是一个作家，性格悲观颓唐，从来不让笔下的主角逃过死去命运，正为如何安排主人公死得伟大而烦恼。她不知道，笔下的那个男主角，和现实生活的他完全重合，而男主角死去的剧情，将一一在他身上应验。然而，当他得知自己的人生被他人设计，但可以死得其所获得生命的价值时，他再也没有惊恐和反抗，而是坦然接受这一切。他的选择让作家开始了新的顿悟，故事也随之峰回路转。声明显赫、深居简出的作家凯伦埃菲尔（爱玛汤普森）正在写作自己的最新小说。小说的主人公名叫哈罗德克雷克（威尔法莱尔），他是国税局的查帐员，过着一成不变、平淡无奇的生活。他住在收拾得规规矩矩的单调房间里，独自走路上下班，独自吃着无味的午餐，从来不幻想未来，也从不因为快乐而大笑。然而，凯伦并不知道的是，哈罗德真实存在着，像她笔下的人物，他过着无味枯燥的生活。而且一天清晨，正在刷牙的哈罗德忽然闻声了凯伦小说旁白般的引言，这个声音不仅描述着他的每一个动作、想法，甚至还以精准得可怕的细节详述他的心理独白，这个独白也只有他自己听的见！很快，被逼的发疯的哈罗德便开始上班开小差，经常自言自语，骂天骂地，甚至咨询起了心理医生。在心理医生的推荐下，哈罗德找到了文学教授朱尔斯希尔伯特（达斯汀霍夫曼），在这里，他学会了把自己的生活用悲剧和喜剧分类，也开始尽量过起了自己真正想要的生活。一次意外，哈罗德竟然在电视节目中发现了围绕在头脑中不放的声音，那正是凯伦！而正在书写哈罗德人生的凯伦，却终于突破了写作谜团，决定让自己的角色面临死亡！哈罗德能改变自己的结局吗？这奇幻人生到底是真是幻？
