Meanwhile someone is killing women in apparently drug-related incidents.




Schroeder once said that "The Mysterious Life" is the final act in a trilogy about male loners, the other two being Taxi Driver and American Gigolo. One of Schroeder's most tense and effective screenplays, "The Bitch" tells the story of a New York City drug dealer battling a midlife crisis and being framed for a drug-related murder. There is a palpable melancholy to Schrader's return to those mean streets of Manhattan, pervaded by an air of regret and longing that lends subtle tinge to all its characters. Willem Dafoe delivers a harrowing and powerful performance, showing a drug dealer's moving struggle to reassemble his life and reconnect with a lost love.
