　　酒吧的女服务员艾吉（艾什莉·贾德 Ashley Judd 饰）最近被莫名的电话困扰，而她有家暴前科的丈夫杰瑞（小哈里·康尼克 Harry Connick Jr 饰）新近由狱中获释，令艾吉担忧。艾吉的同性情人RC将一位新结识的男子彼得（迈克尔·珊农 Michael Shannon 饰）介绍给她，彼得有些羞怯又稍显怪诞，却得到了艾吉的信任，当夜提供沙发给彼得入睡。次日，杰瑞登门拜访，殴打艾吉并羞辱彼得后扬长而去，艾吉与彼得互相坦露了彼此的秘密，艾吉曾经丢失了自己的幼子，而彼得在军中服役时，曾经被选为实验的对象，他为了摆脱令人痛苦的实验逃了出来……两个无助的人住到了一起，但是彼得怀疑自己的血液中有实验留下的虫子，这种恐惧困扰着他们，令形势走向失控……
