This week The Globe and Mail's reporter, Graeme Smith talks to Brian Stewart about covering Afghanistan from the frontlines and the back alleys of Kandahar city and about how he gets his scoops.
In every war or military conflict, a few chroniclers stand out from the crowd; perhaps it is a writer, a photographer, or a foreign correspondent. They become known for the raw energy they bring to the story or for the empathy they show in telling people's stories; but they also have that rare ability to see the bigger picture, when others get mired in complexity and chaos. The Globe and
Mail's reporter, Graeme Smith has all these talents. He has completed more than nine tours in Afghanistan over the course of almost two years. Smith's intelligent, detailed and often courageous reporting from the frontlines and from the streets of Kandahar City have become a "must read" for diplomats, military officers....even the Taliban!.... as well as the general public. He covers combat firefights around Kandahar, but has also investigated the effect of war on Afghan society.
Last spring, his reports on the alleged abuse of war prisoners led to a major uproar in Ottawa, and a scramble by our government to ensure the safety of those Afghans in detention. Smith's reporting record is quite remarkable given that he's still in his twenties, and was a student at Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto only a few years ago. Brian has followed his stories with great interest, benefited from his insights and was glad to interview Smith when he was home recently on leave.
