Information
Deep Jungle reveals how technology is changing the nature of jungle exploration, providing scientists with the means to unlock secrets that enlarge our understanding of rain forests and the role that they play in planetary ecology. Filmed in the rain forests of Borneo, Peru, Cambodia, the Central African Republic, and elsewhere, this program follows researchers as they climb nearly 200-foot-high jungle canopies, confront unknown species, unravel mysteries of animal behavior, and explore hidden archaeological sites that harbor clues about lost civilizations.
New Frontiers
This first episode presents examples of how the rain forest acts as an engine of evolution. It features the Sumatran tiger, recorded on film in the wild for the first time; the frenetic manakin birds of Central America; a giant moth of Madagascar; the rain forest in Borneo; and elephants in the Congo.
Monsters of the Forest
If a nutshell is too hard to be cracked, how can it be indispensable to the existence of untold numbers of living things? That's one of the mysteries of rain forest ecology tackled in this second episode. It also shows that much of the rainfall in a rain forest is generated in part by the trees themselves, illustrating that even animals that live in rivers or flooded areas miles away from the rain forest depend on it.
The Beast Within
What role did the jungle play in humanity's distant past, and what can it tell us about our future? The final episode looks for clues among the primates of the rain forests as well as the traces of ancient civilizations that thrived there, only to vanish. For example, using 3-D infrared satellite imagery, the scientists piece together what might have happened to the lost civilization of Angkor Wat, Cambodia, tracing how the city's relentless expansion led to changes in climate and ecology and eventually to drought, starvation, warfare, and abandonment.
