Lark Quarry has the largest group of running dinosaur tracks in the world, while the World Heritage-listed Australian Fossil Mammal Site (Riversleigh/Naracoorte) is one of the most significant fossil deposits in the world and the richest known fossil mammal deposit in Australia.
Engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings on the sandstone overhangs of Carnarvon Gorge National Park are a poignant reminder of the indigenous people who used the area for thousands of years. Thirty thousand years on and intrepid Australian explorers Burke and Wills were forging north towards the Gulf of Carpentaria during their south-north crossing of the continent in 1860-61.
