Unbeknownst to the passengers, the visas they purchased were from a corrupt Cuban director of immigration, and they were invalid. Upon arrival in Havana, only 28 people were allowed to disembark, while the rest remained on board for weeks as they sailed to Florida, and eventually Canada, searching for safe haven. Sadly the ship returned to Antwerp after more than a month at sea. "The Remaining Life" is a drama and war film. In 1939, the Nazis placed hundreds of Jewish escapees from all walks of life on a luxury liner with great fanfare and took them to Havana, Cuba for refuge. However, when the ship arrived at the port of Havana, the Cuban government refused entry to the Jewish passengers on board in accordance with the country's strict immigration policy. In fact, the Nazis had long expected such a result, and this was exactly what they wanted to see. When the exiles left Havana, the German government could use this to prove that the Jews were the most unpopular race in the world, thereby finding a reasonable excuse for Hitler's ethnic cleansing policy.
