为了和家人一同庆祝感恩节，广告商人尼尔（史蒂夫·马丁SteveMartin饰）坐上了飞往芝加哥的飞机，在机场，一个名叫德尔（约翰·坎迪JohnCandy饰）的粗俗男子让他无法忍受，不幸的是，他们在飞机上竟毗邻而坐本以为忍过两个半小时的旅程就可逃出生天，没想到暴风雪的袭来让飞机更改了航线。在误打误撞之中，尼尔和德尔住进了同一个房间，屋漏偏逢连夜雨，小偷的造访又让他们丢掉了所有的家当，无奈之下，两人只得搭火车回家。随着时间的流逝，尼尔发现德尔的个性并非表面上看起来的那般教人无法忍受，两人的关系也渐渐亲密起来。可是，事情并没有就此结束，在一次又一次的意外中，尼尔觉得家离自己越来越远。
