Features archival performance footage and interviews, this film profiles the world of the violin in the 20th century and its great masters: Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh, Isaac Stern, Fritz Kreisler, Nathan Milstein, Arthur Grumiaux, Jasha Heifetz; Mischa Elman, Alexander Markov, Ivry Gitlis, Joseph Szigeti, Zino Francescatti, Ruggiero Ricci; Boris Goldstein, Michael Rabin, Joseph Hassid, Eugene Ysaye, Laurent Korcia, George Enescu, Ginette Neveu, Jacques Thibaud, Ida Haendel, Leonid Kogan and Henryk Szerying.
"Drawing on archival performance footage and interviews, The Art of Violin evokes the vast panorama of the world of the violin in the 20th century and its most outstanding performers. ....it is hard to express the explosions of joy occasioned by the discovery of long sought-out but undreamed-of archives, such as some silent - and later resynchronised - film footage, or the few brief moments of Chausson's Poeme played by Ginette Neveu, the silent yet moving (in every sense of the word) images of Kreisler and Ysaye, the awe of a young Menuhin, the superb single camera shot of David Oistrakh performing the cadenza from Shostakovich's First Concerto". THE ART OF VIOLIN: DEVIL'S INSTRUMENT dramatically explores the heights to which the art of violin playing has been taken over the 20th century. Acclaimed director Bruno Monsaigeon--who also helmed a series about the legendary Canadian pianist Glenn Gould--brings his exciting visual sense to this program, which uses advanced video technology to restore rare film clips of some of the century's great violin players, including David Oistrakh and Fritz Kreisler. Commentary is provided by luminaries like Hilary Hahn and Yehudi Menuhin.
