Information
Long Way Down (LWD) is a documentary documenting a motorcycle journey undertaken by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, on which they rode south through 18 countries from John o' Groats in Scotland to Cape Agulhas in South Africa via Europe and Africa in 2007. It is a follow-up to the Long Way Round trip of 2004, when the pair rode east from London to New York via Eurasia and North America.
The journey started on 12 May 2007 and finished on 4 August 2007. They were accompanied by the same key members of the team from Long Way Round, including cameraman and directors of photography Claudio Von Planta and Jimmy Simak (who also oversaw music supervision and soundtrack production), producers Russ Malkin and David Alexanian. In addition they decided to travel constantly with a medic, Dai Jones, security officer Jim Foster and various "fixers" - local guides and interpreters - throughout the journey. They rode the BMW R1200GS Adventure, the successor to the R1150GS Adventure bikes they rode in Long Way Round.
The team traveled from their base in Olympia, London to John o' Groats at the northern tip of Scotland to begin their journey. The European leg of the journey ended in Sicily, where they caught a ferry to Tunisia.
From Tunisia they rode into Libya. However, American producer David Alexanian and cameraman Jimmy Simak were unable to obtain the necessary entry visas and were forced to fly from Tunisia to Egypt where they rejoined the team. After visiting the pyramids they boarded a ferry and traveled to Sudan, continued into Ethiopia and then into Kenya, where they crossed the equator. From Kenya they rode to Uganda and then Rwanda, where they had an audience with President Paul Kagame. They went from there to Tanzania, and then into Malawi, where they were joined by Ewan McGregor's wife Eve. The final leg of the trip took them through Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and finally into South Africa. The journey ended at Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point on the continent, to where they were accompanied from Cape Town by a phalanx of bikers, similar to their arrival in New York on the Long Way Round journey.

This episode: battling traffic in Rome; a ferry ride from Sicily to Tunisia; a change in weather slows progress on the way to Tobruk, Libya.


Episode 4
  
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's motorcycle journey takes in Egypt, where the hard rides are taking their toll but spirits are lifted with a tour of the pyramids.
This episode: The Tobruk War Cemetery; Riders for Health in Kenya; a tour of the pyramid of Khufu; traveling through Egypt to catch the ferry to the Sudan.


Episode 5
  
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman break off from their trip to meet with UNICEF on the Eritrean border, to discuss local efforts to prevent land mine fatalities.
This episode: the team is stopped at customs in Ethiopia; a thunderstorm hits while the guys are camping; Ewan has a big fall from his bike.


Episode 6
  
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have mechanical problems in bandit country. Warned not to stop, they have no choice but to set up camp. Will they survive the night?
This episode: the team is in bandit country after crossing into Kenya; the soft sand makes for hard going; a huge muddy river may cause the team to turn around.


Episode 7
  
Charley and Ewan visit a UNICEF site, where they meet former child soldiers, entertain locals with their bike stunts and venture into the Rwandan mountains.
This episode: the bikes and cars finally make it across a muddy river; Ewan sees wild zebras for the first time; wild gorillas in their natural habitat.


Episode 8
  
The team gate-crash a wedding and meet the President of Rwanda, who shares his story as a refugee and, on the Tanzania/Malawi border, Ewan is reunited with his wife.
This episode: Ewan and Charley go to the home of Pal Kagame, the president of Rwanda; Ewan and Eve are reunited after two months; Eve has problems riding on sand.


Episode 9
  
Ewan's wife Eve joins the team for this leg of the journey, as they visit a crocodile farm and share a camp fire and baked beans alongside local tribesmen.
This episode: a UNICEF child-care center in Malawi; Victoria Falls; Charley decides to bungee jump over the Zambezi River.


Episode 10
  
The boys are on the home stretch but their journey is still rife with danger. Ewan has a close call with a charging elephant and cameraman Claudio takes a tumble.
This episode: Ewan and Charley enjoy the culture and company of Namibian bush people; the team is overjoyed upon reaching Cape Town.
