Information
With names like Snowdon, Ben Nevis or Scarfell Pike, Britain 's high places are at once romantic and rooted in the nation's sense of identity. In Mountains, Griff Rhys Jones brings their stories to life.
Travelling the length of the UK by journeying across the rooftops of Britain, Griff Rhys Jones explores some of the most arduous and roughest mountain landscapes. It is a journey that takes him from the remotest areas of Northern Scotland to the wilds of Dartmoor in the South West, including some of Britain's most beautiful, rugged and fascinating locations. Along the way, he also reveals how these dramatic terrains came into existence.
While Griff experiences the flora and fauna, the breath-taking landscapes and stunning seasonal shifts, he meets the undiscovered mountain communities and the real people who inhabit Britain's highlands: shepherds, mountain rescue teams, scientists, farmers and artists - they deliver a real understanding and passion for the raw, natural beauty that has fascinated us for centuries. Griff also brings to life the history of epic battles, communities and famous people connected with the places visited.
This magnificent BBC series is Griff Rhys Jones' labour of love, a personal journey of discovery and a lasting testament to some of the most exciting, unique and treasured parts of Britain.
Northern Scotland
Griff Rhys Jones begins his exploration of Britain's mountains in the breathtaking wilderness of the northwest highlands of Scotland. The area was once home to half the population of Scotland, but Griff finds a vast, empty landscape closer to the Arctic Circle than to his native London. He meets a crofter who wants to encourage people back to the land and an artist who enjoys the emptiness. On the Isle of Skye, Griff explores a mountain range that is privately owned, but up for sale.
The Lakes
Griff Rhys Jones explores the mountains of Britain. A few hundred years ago, the Lake District was highly unpopular, but today the picturesque area is visited by 12 million people every year. Griff discovers how, with a little help from William Wordsworth, The Lakes became a source of inspiration to other writers and artists, including Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The dramatic terrain also encouraged visitors to find spirtual fulfillment in nature, and was the birthplace of the Quaker movement.
Central Highlands
Griff Rhys Jones continues his tour of the mountains of Britain with a journey to the Central Highlands, where he explores Glencoe, the Cairngorm range and Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Griff explores ambitious feats of Victorian engineering and finds a stunning example of a Victorian shooting lodge. He also tries his hand at local pursuits including dog sledding and skiing, before joining a group of runners in training for the formidable annual Ben Race.
Pennines
Griff Rhys Jones continues his exploration of Britain's mountains with a journey across the Pennines, the natural barrier between Yorkshire and Lancashire. Griff ventures underground to the heart of the mountains in search of the source of one of the country's most important rivers. He also discovers how the workers of the Pennines fought to claim the mountains as their own as an escape from the industry of the cities, and meets the ramblers who proudly uphold the right to roam.
Wales
Griff Rhys Jones' journey around the mountains of Britain brings him to Snowdonia in Wales. Tales of dragons, giants and King Arthur feature in the mountains' history, but with millions of visitors every year and a railway now taking visitors to the summit, it's clear that modern life has made its mark. Yet the mountains continue to protect a fragile ecology, and Griff meets some of the people who respect this natural balance, including climbers and eco-friendly entrepreneurs.
