剧情梗概：
一对原本乡下“阳春舞台班“苦命姐妹春花和月红，在戏霸唐经理的阴谋算计下来到大上海的灯红酒绿下唱戏谋生，在此与已经唱红大上海的名角商水花和文秀竹遭遇。四位越剧舞台姐妹、大上海的时代女性上演了一段悲欢离合的浮沉故事。春花和月红，原本情同手足的一对姐妹花面对大上海的浮华世界，人生理想和价值观都发生了转变。春花洁身自好，不任唐经理摆布，面对商水花的“越剧皇后”之争和众姐妹的排挤也不放在心上。遇到进步青年林岚、江波，在他们的鼓舞下内心世界开始觉悟带领大家去前线慰问战士，并创作了《花木兰》、《梁红玉》等鼓舞人心的新剧目，虽然不断的收到唐经理的打压和破坏，但春花在一次次困境中变得更加坚强、坚定；月红却抵挡不了大上海浮华世界的诱惑，不但爱慕虚荣，与商水花争风吃醋，更深信唐经理的挑拨离间，与春花的感情决裂，姐妹成为陌路人。商水花虽身为“越剧皇后”却是唐经理的小老婆受其操纵。她不堪自己舞台地位的没落，更忍受不了月红和唐经理的关系，精神开始崩溃。她的好搭档生性淡泊的文秀竹嫁人后退出舞台，在丈夫牺牲后，她开始和春花联手演出先进剧目，在上海滩引起了强烈的关注。但秀竹却成了唐经理打压春花的牺牲品，饱受谣言的中伤，身心憔悴的她不堪折磨离开人世。秀竹的死打击了商水花，她在春花的影响下决定以自己的人生经历创作一部越剧姐妹的戏，但现实的压力和唐经理的迫害，她发现自己依旧无法摆脱残酷的命运，绝望的她最终选择了自杀来表达对黑暗势力的控诉。抗日胜利后，内战开始了，大上海的繁华继续沉沦在战火硝烟中。春花接受了林岚的建议，将鲁迅先生的《祝福》搬上舞台，为了彻底摆脱唐经理之流的控制和盘剥，春花发动越剧界的姐妹进行义演，筹建戏院，却因为政局混乱，她们的理想依旧渺茫。解放上海的战斗已经打响，唐经理抛下月红逃到台湾，从国民党士兵手中被救的春花四处寻找月红，二人不期在十字街头相遇，姐妹激动地拥抱在一起……
