二战过后，罗马同许多城市一样，充斥失业和贫困，人们常常为一个工作机会争得头破血流。已失业多时的里奇（LambertoMaggiorani）费劲千辛万苦获得一份海报张贴的工作后，却为这份工作需要一辆自行车犯愁，为了以后的日子好过，他用妻子的嫁妆--床单从换回已经当掉的自行车，不想，他的自行车在上班第一天就被盗。里奇同儿子布鲁诺（EnzoStaiola）寻遍罗马大街小巷，也没能找到他赖以活命的自行车，眼见无指望的日子又要降临，里奇决定以牙还牙，可是他的运气却没有别的小偷好。剧情版本二：意大利新现实主义电影的杰出代表作，世界电影史上的前十部不朽经典片之一。西方影坛的《偷自行车的人》，以黑白的影像刻画了中年男子里奇的生活境遇，围绕着自行车，它讲述的是另一份痛楚，生活的无奈，贫穷的烦恼！现在失业、下岗在我们周围也不鲜见，把五十多年前的这部《偷自行车的人》放到今天的社会环境下看，会有一番别样的感受。《偷自行车的人》(TheBicycleThief)是意大利新现实（写实）主义的经典作品。新现实主义从罗伯托罗西里尼45年的《罗马，不设防的城市》开始到德西卡48年的《偷自行车的人》形成一个高峰。新现实主义的特点是讲效实景和自然光效，采用非职业演员和反类型片处理方法。这个法则到现在还有不少人在使用，包括我国的不少新晋导演。《偷自行车的人》一片在评论上的成功，充分反映新现实主义美学在电影领域融合的一次高峰。故事发生在二战后的失业、贫困充斥社会的意大利，一名下岗工人好不容易获得一份工作，而这份工作需要一辆自行车，当他倾其所有购买到一辆新车后，不料第二天就被偷走了。想尽所有办法仍无济于事，在各种压力下他终于走上了偷车的道路。本片强调现实主义，于是演员表演和场面调度方面几近全自然的形式，看本片时你很少会感到有人工导演过的痕迹，镜头之间的衔接也很流畅，而且比较规范，让观众不会特意去注意到摄像机的存在。而且新现实主义一般很注重摄像机内部剪接，直接在拍摄现场完成分镜头，这样也会让影片产生一种自然感和流畅感。相比之下，国内某些写实主义作品那晃动的镜头反而不利于观众的全情投入。尽管如此，导演在不少细节还是加入了自己的主观意识，尤其在个人与群体方面处理得十分到位。片中有不少戏是就是描述男主人公一个人与多数人在意志上或在肉体上是对立的，对抗的。第一场戏，他在职介所拿到了自己的第一份工作，而在旁边有上百人没有获得工作，那时候人群与男主人公的对立是内在的。而在中间一场大家在教堂内安静地作礼拜的戏中，男主人公却不得不为找到自行车而与一老头进行大声的争执，这在声音上就形成与大众的对抗。在影片后段，男主人公找到偷车的嫌疑人，但苦于没有证据，被嫌疑人的一群街坊邻居围攻，差点大打出手，这段主要是身体上的对抗。电影的最后一场戏，主人公由于偷别人的自行车被群众捉住，在饱受辱骂和打击之下，这时他的生理与心理的承受力可以说濒临崩溃，影片的情绪也积累到高峰。最后的一个镜头是从背部拍摄的全景，男主人公和他的小儿子低着头，慢慢地融入到了下班的人群当中，向前木然地行走，光线阴暗。由于是黑白片，色调的转换通常是明和暗，而男主人公在失意的时候常常在阴影里走，在一场戏被愚弄后，一大群人站在阴影处看着他，他和儿子慢慢走在明亮的地方，却是逆光，这样面部就是一层重重的阴影，这也是让他彻底失望的一个写照。同样的失业、下岗的故事，把五十多年前的这部《偷自行车的人》放到今天的社会环境下看，会有一番别样的感受。
