剧情梗概：
明中叶，东西两厂明争暗斗不断。东厂曹公公手下养了三大高手，分别是孟星魂（梁朝伟饰）、高老大（杨紫琼饰）、叶翔（甄子丹饰）三大高手，亦有小王爷（林志颖饰）帮忙。高老大经营快活林，孟星魂与叶翔皆是其从小养大的结拜弟弟，三人亲如手足。叶翔暗恋大姐，大姐却对孟星魂情有独钟。孟星魂与八卦门掌门之女小蝶（王祖贤饰）是爱侣，小蝶亦已怀有孟之骨肉。四人面对纠缠的感情痛苦不已，而此时孟星魂亦与高大姐接下刺杀孙玉函（徐锦江饰），将西厂李公公控制下的聚贤山庄一网打尽的任务。到底任务能否完成？而四人的感情又将何去何从？剧情版本二：这是根据有名古龙武侠小说改编的影片，80年代早期，邵氏电影公司曾经拍摄过同名的电影，由楚原导演。本片的导演是麦当杰，是一部古装奇幻武侠片，身为该片动作指导的程小东发挥了他一贯的特色，使用许多钢丝技巧，将影片的武打场面拍摄得飘渺空灵，浪漫惟美。本片在动作之外，亦讲述了一个凄美的爱情故事，明朝年间，太监弄权，东厂曹公公与西厂李公公成为两股抗衡势力。曹公公表面上是一个全身瘫痪的忠臣，他声称发现李公公在武林中勾结聚贤山庄庄主孙玉伯欲图谋反，欲得其密函揭发其阴谋。孟星魂和叶翔皆为快活林主人高老大从小收养的孤儿，同时也是快活林的两位顶尖杀手。孟星魂性格开朗浪漫，喜爱观星空，深得高老大的赏识，奈何孟钟情于爱妻小蝶，小蝶一向不知孟的身份，以为孟是一名小商人，然两人是真心相爱，志趣相投；甄子丹饰演的叶翔冷漠孤傲，内心却对高老大怀着深深爱恋。高老大派孟和叶取得密函后赶往曹府，结果发现曹并不是全身瘫痪，相反更是一位武功极为高强的高手，这次武林中的腥风血雨就是由他一手掀起来的。此时，李公公已经被杀，真正预谋造反的其实是曹，于是一场血战开始，在小王爷的拔刀相助下，高、叶、孟终于把曹置于死地。此时，高老大可以号令武林，但她又怕失去孟星魂，然最终孟星魂之心早属小蝶，而叶翔欲向高老大表白心迹，爱如流星爱如蝴蝶，是否如流星样辉煌，如蝴蝶样华美，然而最终，流星和蝴蝶却一样短暂如梦的幻美，而爱，又将如何
