剧情梗概：
退伍军人李长江（刘德华饰）被两名抢劫的战友连累入狱，他受尽警察毛向阳（徐锦江饰）毒打后被判处死刑，临刑当口，长江用父亲给他的锯片侥幸逃脱长江找到人蛇集团偷渡到香港，于路结识了鸡心（莫少聪饰）、阿满（李美凤饰），阿满姑娘的善良深深打动了长江。因香港的亲戚拒绝接收长江，他只能在工地为人蛇集团头目良哥工作还账，期间长江听说阿满被卖为妓女，日夜思索搭救方法，长江孤身力拼皮条帮派不敌，只得在良哥介绍下帮助湖南帮老大沙皮卓打劫金店，以此借助帮派力量搭救阿满。同在沙皮卓手下出力的鸡心在打劫金店时险些被擒，长江搭救他以后两人结为莫逆。长江帮沙皮卓打劫后对方并未履行承诺，反而用阿满逼迫长江继续犯罪，同时毛向阳为了抓捕长江专程赴港剧情版本二：长江是荣誉军人，因牵涉一宗刑事案被判死刑，后偷渡来香港，途中熟悉了常满和鸡心；中国方面亦派特工毛向阳来港，追缉江归案；江到港后，本想安分守己，后来却为了被卖落火坑的满，投靠黑帮何老大，何知道江感情脆弱，加以利用；中国特工阳到港后，立即展开搜捕行动，与香港警方发生不少摩擦，一次行动中，江把阳制服，但又不忍杀他，令何反感，江知道何预备除去自己，于是与心、满商量对策，计划劫到一笔钱后，杀死何救出满，...电影评价：有人说这部是最没意思的，因为不涉及政治，大圈必死的定理居然改成了大团圆结局，大陆公安居然被成功说服。但是我觉得这部改改也挺好，之前的两部比较写实比较压抑，最后一集完全上升到卡夫卡变形记那套东西，有点太虚幻太做作。这一部弄个当红炸子鸡来耍帅打斗，再弄个当年红的美女来卖弄风情，票房上算是能补补以前的亏空。动作设计还是挺不错的，脸谱化这一集比较严重点，但是整体剧情还是挺有意思的，大陆和香港人之间的距离，还是比较写实的。第一部讲述大圈之凶猛，第二部就研究政治之荒谬，第三部则开始了命运之探究。其实每一部都讲述了命运，看了这么多年电影，我忽然悟到，一个人的命运其实跟自己的内心想法是一致的；倘若你坚持不被诱惑不丧失纯真，那么一定会得到好的结局。这个道理或许很幼稚可笑，但你再想想，人活着不就应该这么过吗？即使命运坎坷，坚持艰苦，但只要你肯去做追求自己内心美好的一面，那么无憾也是必然的，幸福将是可能的。第三集的‘省港旗兵’，由刘德华、莫少聪饰演主要角色。整部片子下来更让我觉得失去前两部的社会写意寓意，导演的风格有点向早期的都市爱情黑帮片转变。影片仍以内地与香港的民煮落差作引线，拉开以都市男女爱情及黑帮殴斗为主题剧情的序幕，现实写实意义上比前两部弱了许多。相对于刘德华后来的电影1990年开始电影‘天若有情’系列，本片的剧情催泪、感动度也弱给了‘天若有情’。
