剧情梗概：
风流才子唐伯虎（凌波饰）在庙里邂逅了华太师（井淼饰）家的丫鬟秋香（李菁饰），唐伯虎被秋香的美貌和柔情所吸引，又经不住她三笑情挑，遂决定隐瞒身份，进入华太师家作书童，借此机会接近秋香。进入华府后，唐伯虎终于找到机会向秋香表明了自己的真实身份和来意，可惜秋香对此却并不相信。华太师辞退了华府内不称职的教书先生，文采奕奕的唐伯虎顶替了这一职位。一晃眼数月过去，唐伯虎和秋香之间的情事依旧毫无进展，某日，唐伯虎的好友祝枝山（魏平澳饰）拜访华府，意外发现了失踪已久的唐伯虎的身影，在祝枝山的帮助之下，唐伯虎最终能否抱得美人归呢？剧情版本二：风流才子唐伯虎（凌波饰）在苏州虎丘山遊玩，遇到相国夫人，带了四个美婢来烧香。其中的秋香（李菁饰）美艳出众，不禁为之神往，秋香临行前向他一笑、再笑、三笑，使他神魂颠倒。唐伯虎决定扮做穷书生，卖身相国府做书僮，以便追求秋香。影片评价：《三笑》版本很多，较有名的早前有长城的陈思思那一版，69年邵氏的这一版，是凌波反串唐伯虎，演秋香的是娃娃脸的李菁。凌波脸大又方正，扮才子是很旧派那一种，仍是《梁祝》才子佳人戏的延续。岳枫自编自导的这一版故事很周正，周星驰的《唐伯虎点秋香》便依照这故事恶搞，像唐伯虎逗华府的二位傻公子，自命风流窃玉偷香，被周星驰拿来更新下直接用。邵氏武侠剧的女星常是摆设似地花瓶，李菁圆脸大眼，少许婴儿肥，长得漂亮又不油腻，扮委屈姑娘一嘟嘴儿，最恰当。扮秋香就差一点，好在戏不在她，只需笑他三笑而已，其他的就交给凌波去吧。岳老爷的这部黄梅调电影，拍的是才子佳人，可怎么看怎么像是当时的新派武侠片的拍法。机位一律偏低，微微仰起，好像在拍侠士侠女一般，直觉是不可亲。然后就是实景份量加大，唐寅追船一段，一直到卖身，都是用的实景拍摄。戏台上的锦绣华服入了红尘，看起来可就不那么可信了。在这一段岳老爷用横移来拍唐伯虎目送大船远去，加上一些芦苇、垂柳之类的遮挡，倒是拍出了一点横轴画的况味，可圈可点。
