剧情梗概：
影片开头一段，神父安格尔不断犯罪，笨拙但又顺利地成了一个“恶棍”，这些情节既令人好笑又能引发悬念。直到神父向书店老板解释，我们才知道原来他这样做是为了和撒旦联系，以便制止世界末日的到来。在神学上造诣颇深的神父安格尔研究神学多年发现了一个天大的秘密，那就是基督的敌人将在1995年12月25日的马德里出现，而那一天将是世界末日。将近圣诞节了，神父来到正在到处被暴力“清洗”的混乱的马德里，他从一个快被烧死的人身上偷了钱包和身份证，顺手偷了一个箱子，又来到音像店，要看店的大汉琼斯给他找几张重金属唱片。琼斯和他颇为投缘，不仅送给他一个名叫“撒旦”地下乐队的小样，而且还给了乐队演唱的场所“地狱”和他自己母亲开的旅馆的地址。安格尔来到旅馆住了下来，然后去了书店，神父找到一个当红的预知未来的电视节目“黑暗地带”的主持人卡文出的一本书，要把它偷走。在书店管理者面前，他宣布了世界末日的到来，并告诉对方自己就是要做个恶棍，以便能和撒旦取得联系，然后在仪式上杀死它。然后，神父打昏要给精神病院打电话的老板，逃了出来。安格尔要琼斯帮忙寻找魔鬼，两个人跟踪卡文，闯进他的住处，然后要这个电视上的先知告诉他如何投靠魔鬼。安格尔不惜使用暴力，卡文无奈只能胡乱招供，要他去找处女之血。安格尔用安眠药从琼斯女友身上得到处女之血，又打昏了琼斯的母亲，才回到卡文的住处。一番仪式过后，什么结果都没有，卡文承认自己刚才是胡乱说的，而就在这时，一只“神圣”的蟑螂出现，接着就是代表魔鬼的怪兽出现又离开。深信了神父观点的卡文也决定和他们一起寻找魔鬼，突然有人疯狂撞门，三个人从窗户逃了出去，卡文不慎摔在灯箱上，神父和琼斯逃走了。卡文被救下来之后，连忙赶到电视台，要求停播圣诞节目，播出自己的特别节目，就在他和制片人争吵的时候，突然发现了自己书中记载的魔鬼的签名。安格尔独自找到“地狱”，却被人误会打昏，琼斯把他救了出来。两人看到卡文的特别节目，打通了卡文的热线电话，狂热的卡文在电视上宣布了世界末日的到来。卡文找到两人，把自己的发现告诉他们，带他们来到“魔鬼的教堂”——一所还没完全盖好的大厦。在大厦里，他们果然听到婴儿的哭声，但暴力“清洗”马德里的暴徒出现，打倒了卡文，把安格尔和琼斯逼上了楼顶。琼斯要安格尔藏起来，安格尔看到了暴徒幻化成魔鬼，把琼斯从楼上丢下去。安格尔逃回楼下，看到卡文正要被焚烧，他用捡来的手枪击毙了暴徒，救出了卡文。安格尔看到了一旁已经被枪杀的一对穷人和新出生的婴儿，又回身击毙了扑上来的暴徒-魔鬼。九个月后，“黑暗地带”换了一个主持人恢复播出，远方的卡文却向安格尔感叹着自己拯救世界却没有人知道。用这样短的篇幅去描述这样一部影片，几乎是不太可能的，影片中复杂的情节转折只能被忽略掉。这是一部现代感很强的影片，剧情复杂节奏紧凑，但同时这也是一部有着西班牙传统的影片，色调明快，人物个性极度鲜明，而且主角安格尔的身上显然就是唐·吉诃德的影子，而力大无脑的琼斯，当然就是桑丘。两个人再加上卡文，三个人陷入一种迷幻的激情之中，荒谬地试图拯救世界。影片并没有在这个情节的现实性上作太多文章，也许这是一个荒诞的“神学”故事，也许是安格尔的狂热和卡文的迷幻剂在作怪，反正我们看到了一部精彩的影片，谁还会管那么多。影片导演伊格莱西亚，是西班牙新近崛起的年轻导演，我们从这部影片中就可以看到他丰富的想象力，和操控复杂故事的叙事能力。影片获得西班牙戈雅奖最佳导演奖，从此开辟了伊格莱西亚的电影道路。但伊格莱西亚似乎有些底气不足，在下一部影片《狂野双辣》中没有更进一步展开他丰富的想象，而是陷入了以情节和视觉效果取胜的心态之中。
