剧情梗概：
1910年，在巴西的马腊尼昂，心智有些“走火入魔的”瓦斯科买下了远方的一大片荒漠，他希望过上远离文明社会的生活，终生与沙丘作伴。在瓦斯科的一味坚持下，尚在怀孕的妻子阿丽娅和阿丽娅的母亲玛丽亚也不得不跟随搬迁到那片人烟稀少的荒漠。　　生活刚刚安顿下来，一群黑人便造访了这里，他们打算抢劫瓦斯科，瓦斯科只好用自己的部分家当打发他们。生活开始每况愈下，工人们纷纷离去，而瓦斯科后来也悲惨的死去，只剩下两个孤苦无依的女人和命运未卜的胎儿。　　在一位前黑奴后裔马苏的帮助下，母女俩终于找到了谋生的渠道。随着女儿玛丽亚的出生，阿丽娅的苦难生活仍在延续，她希望有朝一日能回到城市，而这希望也在日复一日的煎熬中越发渺茫，以至最终变为随遇而安。　　一次，阿丽娅发现远处有座外国科学家进行天文学研究的营地，在那里她与路易兹邂逅，两人共度一夜。而当第二天阿丽娅回去寻找母亲和女儿时，却发现流沙毁掉了住处，母亲不幸遇难。　　善良的黑人马苏早就爱上了阿丽娅，只是远远的关注着母女的一切。多年后，玛丽亚长大成人，她见到了返回此地的路易兹，也知道了他同母亲的关系，阿丽娅要女儿同路易兹一同回到文明世界，而她已经不再向往，因为半生的风蚀已经让她无法理解遥远的文明……
