剧情梗概：
1949年9月，在人民解放军强大的攻势下，国民党政府退至最后一个据点重庆。新中国建立前夕，毛泽东、朱德约请刘伯承、邓小平和贺龙在北京香山双清别墅，研究部署、制定了“大迂回、大包围，断其后路，再打之”的解放大西南的战略实施方针。刘伯承、邓小平指挥的二野主力及四野一部，以隐蔽的动作，从敌人意料不到的湘鄂黔川地域突然挺进，对敌人围而歼之。刘、邓乘火车南下，在徐州火车站邂逅一位铁路专家，邓小平主动热诚地与他商讨如何尽快建设成渝铁路问题。解放西南的战役尚未打响，邓小平已在考虑未来的建设问题了。刘、邓冒雨悄然人川途中，邓小平果断恰当地处理了“逃兵事件”，提升有头脑的炊事班长王铁汉为连指导员，给大家上了一堂“将革命进行到底”的生动的思想教育课。当我军声东击西实施大包围时，蒋介石错误地断定“川东地形险恶，易守难攻——刘伯承一代名将，绝不会避易就难，舍近求远。”敌宋希濂部被突然出现在川东的我军主力痛击，十余万人仓皇西逃。王铁汉献计，我军巧渡乌江，俘虏敌十四兵团司令钟彬。接着又突破了敌人护卫重庆的最后一道防线白马山。毛泽东来电建议“吸引更多的胡宗南部队到重庆聚歼之”，刘伯承经过缜密思考，认为在重庆聚歼敌人会失去最佳时机，应尽快解放重庆，减少敌人对重庆的破坏，并致电中央阐述了这一决定。我军于1949年11月30日解放了山城重庆。在周恩来副主席的关切下，在刘、邓、贺的精心安排下，国民党西康省主席刘文辉、西南军政长官邓锡侯、潘文华、云南省主席卢汉先后起义。蒋介石见大势已去，于12月10日逃往台湾。胡宗南命第五军团李文为最高指挥，自己却乘飞机逃离成都。敌阵营大乱，几位兵团司令纷纷倒戈。我军狠狠打击了攻崃战役中顽抗的李文，迫使李文投诚，成都宣告解放。刘、邓命部队原路返回，贺龙率部下进驻成都。1950年4月，西南战役结束了，邓小平深情送别即将去南京担任军事学院院长的刘伯承。
