剧情梗概：
解放前，四川西部深山中潜藏着一批土匪。警察局密探齐远静、周洛乔装成商人奉命来到紫云道观投宿。进观前，他俩发现山涧下仰卧一女子，可一转眼又不见了。进观后，他们又发现一些可疑点。夜晚，道观当家守敬请齐远静看戏班子演出，他借机了解到在此住宿的其他人的情况。看戏中，齐远静惊奇发现戏班子一女子竟与道姑芙蓉长相十分相似。事后，他得知那女子是芙蓉的孪生姐姐--碧玉，她随戏班子来道观是想暗中保护妹妹。他了解到青年诗人姚广文来道观的目的，是为查证家父的好友，前任当家玉空真人的死因。齐远静听说观内还住着一位众人仰慕的孔大师，便决定找他了解更多的情况。姚广文酒后吐真言。他带齐远静、周洛几经周折去地宫寻找玉空真人画的真迹。地宫里尸骨累累，他们终于找到玉空真人的猫画真迹，从中判断出玉空真人受害的真情。
