剧情梗概：
2002年10月19日，专事袭击犯罪交易现场获取高额赃款的宫本（金城武饰），在一次行动中发现参与交易的一方居然是自己的仇敌沟口（岸谷五郎饰），宫本的故人昔日被沟口所杀，正欲复仇的宫本却被一个突然出现的少女美里（铃木杏饰）打乱了步骤，只得听任沟口逃离。美里自称是来自2084年的未来人。未来的世界遭到外星人袭击，躲避在西藏的幸存人类试图运用失控转移器将里美输送到2002年来改变历史拯救人类。里美的任务只剩两天时间，只好请求宫本协助她拯救世界。宫本对里美的故事嗤之以鼻，他首先要解决的敌人是有着三合会背景的沟口，然而在里美的威逼之下，宫本只好扮演起救世主剧情版本二：宫本(金城武饰)是一个「Returner」，职责是替聘用者潜入黑市的深处，盗取大笔大笔无迹可寻的巨款，以极高效率将款项安全交到聘用者手上。宫本本为一个孤儿，他的童年好友喜宽被一个神秘人杀死，宫本已下定决心要找出凶手报仇。在横滨的海岸，宫本正要潜入另一个地下世界，遇上当年杀死他好友的凶手。宫本按捺不住激动的情绪展开一场死斗时，错手枪伤了一名来自未来的无辜少女美里(铃木杏饰)。美里大难不死，还聘请宫本替她完成一项特别任务，一同两天内将世界从危难中解脱幕后花絮《回归者》的剧本及策划是从两年前开始的。导演山琦贵在2000年的作品《打机王》(Juvenile)中，首次运用了VFX视觉特效技术，得到国内外相当高的评价。VFX(VisualSpecialEffects)技术是以传统SFX（SpecialEffect）技术与数码化特殊效果结合而成，将CGI(ComputerGenerationImage)三次元CG与DIP(DigitalImageProcessor)二次元实际影像混合使用，创造出比以往更加逼真传神的特技场面。本片由山琦贵导演亲自操刀制作超过300个运用VFX技术的镜头，展现出令人耳目一新的视觉冲击。该片由活跃在港台和日本等地，在亚洲颇受瞩目的当红偶像金城武主演。金城武在看过《打机王》后惊叹于VFX技术所造成的视觉效果。当时他手头有超过20部以上的片约，但他最终还是选择了《回归者》。大规模的投资、新奇的特效技术以及充满悬念的情节设计相信是吸引我们的大帅哥参演的条件吧。美里一角由年仅15岁的铃木杏凭着实力和演技夺得。她清新的风格可以充分表现出片中来自未来的少女的缥缈和美丽。扮演反面角色沟口的岸谷五郎是日本有代表性的演技派演员，这是惯常出演温情脉脉的角色的岸谷首次扮演冷酷恶人，对他来说很具有挑战性，也非常令人期待。
