剧情梗概：
辽沈战役打响之前，王顺拿着爹画给他的一张图纸上萝北县城找爹的好友“赵山东”。因为街头发生的一起爆炸案，王顺让驻守县城的东北民主联军某连战士当做疑犯抓走。县城接连发生几起爆炸案，给当地群众带来伤亡的同时，更引起不好的反映。为了给群众一个交代，分区决定枪决一批犯人，王顺的名字首当其冲。第二天清晨，王顺从禁闭室里出来尿尿，在空气中嗅出一股胡子的味道，让驻城的一个连队避免了重大的伤亡。胡子突然来袭，占领县城制高点，守城连队奉命撤出县城，王顺捡起一条长枪，干掉几个胡子后随队撤退。王顺随队撤出县城后打算就此逃走，途中看到一个女战士落入胡子之手，遂开枪击毙四个胡子，救出卫生员林红。林红听王顺说了他的事，觉得王顺不像坏人，劝王顺随她归队。王顺随林红找到连队集结地姚家湾，王副连长当即命令索班长又将王顺当疑犯给捆了起来。连队得到情报，袭击县城的一小股胡子正向天柱峰方向回撤，宗连长决定跟上这股胡子伺机予以消灭。宗连长解开王顺身上的绳子，带上王顺一起出发，林红作为卫生员跟在队伍后面。全连追进丛林后迷失了方向，王顺机警地发现胡子的踪迹。原来，王顺11岁时就跟着他爹在奉天兵工厂干活，后来又让胡子抓去给做过饭，算是跟胡子在一块待过、了解胡子的习性。在王顺的引领下，宗连长的连队很快找到胡子的老窝，其间还得到两个当地老乡的帮助。胡子头子鲁一刀在天柱峰凭借两座碉堡负隅顽抗，宗连长为避免战士伤亡决定等待分区的援兵。宗连长在山下修筑工事，让索班长、林红、王顺和当地两个老乡去找日本人当年留在熊瞎子沟的火炮。王顺凭着自己的经验，帮助索班长在深山密林里找到日本人留下的一门火炮，还从一只狗熊的嘴里又一次救下林红。有了火炮，王顺拿出当年在奉天兵工厂学的手艺，装上火炮、校准炮口，三炮就将鲁一刀的两座碉堡掀翻。鲁一刀失去了碉堡，一帮胡子做猕猴散，宗连长乘势进攻，一举拿下鲁一刀的老巢。王顺随连队回到萝北县城，“疑犯”的罪名因为宗连长和林红的努力而摘掉，王顺获准加入民主联军，其实在王顺的心里，他早就是连队中的一员。
