剧情梗概：
一个炎热的夏季，一名寄居巴黎的音乐家皮埃尔获得了一份意外的遗产，这似乎是他命运的转机。但很快，这转机就从正面转向了负面。遗产落空，而好友此时都在外地。就在一次短短的旅途中，他一步步沦为了流浪汉。这几乎是侯麦的电影中最富有戏剧性的情节。但这戏剧性情节在影片中也仅仅只是一次契机。　　主人公的社会身份在一天天的窘迫中丧失，他的尊严也几乎荡然无存，周围的一切对他而言也已经完全不同了。在这里，事物呈现出的是对于不同境遇的人而言的相对性。主人公的境遇可以使得周围一切事物的意义发生改变，商铺小贩的叫卖，也许平时在主人公耳朵里只是噪音，而对于已经食不果腹的主人公来说却像是欲望的引诱；而周围的游客们的怡然自得对比的是皮埃尔对巴黎的咒骂。影片最后，转机再次降临到主人公身上，主人公仍如前一次一样振臂高呼。结尾给出了不断叠化、不断逼近的狮子星座的图案，似乎是在对应影片的名字，对应皮埃尔对自己命运的笃信。　　但命运如同星座一样不甚可信。星座的命名由人所赋予，如果没有人的命名，它们只是散落在天空中的亮点，更不可能成为具有象征意义的形象。几乎所有的旅游地吸引游客的地方就在于此，如果不能赋予这些风景超出日常生活之外的意义，它们便与其它的地方没有太大的差别。一块石头、一棵树、一片沙滩当然会有所差异，但至少没有主人公们想象的那么大。故事所给出的训诫，并不是情节所讲述的主人公的命运，而是内隐于情节与主人公所想象的自己的命运之间。某种意义上，这也是一个“道德故事”。正如影片中皮埃尔的画家朋友弗莱德所说的，钱也许会埋没皮埃尔。当然在这里，侯麦并不是要重复一个古老的谚语。关键是，对于皮埃尔来说，他的价值会存于何处？　　皮埃尔的奏鸣曲被那封带来遗产的电报所中断，而也正是那首未完成的奏鸣曲才让他的好友认出他来，摆脱了厄运。或许也正因如此，那首奏鸣曲可能永远无法完成。而这与遗产的得失是完全不同的另一个面向，情节也因此并未停留在一个层面上。最终，主人公的命运好像真的应验了，但那也未尝不是一个圈套，抑或一种障眼法。　　在巴黎街头，皮埃尔对着石筑的墙壁捶打、咒骂。他并不知道，他攻击的正是他自己的名字（在法语中，他的名字Pierre与石头pierres完全相同）。石头正像一面无法照见面孔的镜子映证出他自身的存在。皮埃尔在沦落中，几乎沉默不语，没有人能认出他来，即使是就在他身边的朋友（画家弗莱德和皮埃尔坐在路边同一条长凳上，却都没有注意到对方）。是小提琴帮他发出了声音（这一次皮埃尔的演奏并没有像上一次在聚会上那样发出刺耳的声音），并让他重新融入到了他所咒骂的巴黎。但之后的故事，也许只是这个故事的不同的变体。结论也如狮子星座的图案一样暧昧不清，皮埃尔在沉默中所想的正是这个故事真正令人发想的动力，即使他所想的和我们所想的并不一样。
