剧情梗概：
一个暴风雨的夜晚，一对夫妻争吵起来，阳台外是汹涌的海浪拍打着礁石。罗伯特正在海边行走，忽然发现海滩上有一个女人趴着，他走近才发现自己认识这个女人，他急忙跑开想去找人，两个女孩发现了他和那具尸体。警察根据勒死被害人的一根风衣腰带认定了他是正要逃走的凶手，决定起诉他。这是个古老偏僻的小镇，人们几乎没见过这样的杀人案，罗伯特趁上个案子乱糟糟吵闹的时候只多戴了一付眼镜就逃出了法庭。警察局督察的女儿爱瑞卡碰到了他，虽然对他的清白还很怀疑，但还是答应帮他寻找证据风衣。爱瑞卡帮他躲藏起来，还带来食物。逃出警察追捕后，两人来到罗伯特丢风衣的酒馆，引起一番争斗之后，终于获得消息。为了和罗伯特一起寻找风衣，爱瑞卡到姑妈家，本想借机向父亲撒谎，却被姑妈看出两人关系的破绽。第二天一早，两人终于找到了风衣，但却没有找到衣带，只是从拿风衣的老头口中得知最初偷风衣的人有不断眨眼的毛病，又从风衣中找到一盒饭店火柴。爱瑞卡和老头则在饭店做最后的努力，已经绝望的罗伯特向警察自首了。但就在罗伯特将要被带走的时候，饭店乐队的鼓手，也就是真正的凶手却因为高度精神紧张而昏倒，混乱中他被老头认出，当场认罪。罗伯特终于洗清冤枉。
