剧情梗概：
三大战役结束后，中国的局势发生了根本性变化。国民党势力撤出北平之前，对文艺界人士采取了一系列攻心政策，希望他们也一同离开北平。远在西柏坡的毛泽东等中共领导人对北平文艺界人士也给予了高度关注，派出田汉等同志进行安抚慰问，国共双方对这些文艺界人士的争取展开了一场无声的战争。在北平文艺界人士中，齐白石是双方极力争取的对象之一。国民党对他进行了一系列恐吓、利诱，使齐白石心生惧意，害怕自己多年的画作会被共产党查没。就在齐白石惊恐动摇之时，徐悲鸿给他捎来了中共和毛泽东的慰问，齐白石一颗悬着的心得以放了下来。北平解放后，艾青受毛泽东委派上门拜访齐白石，齐白石深表谢意。拜访过程中，艾青注意到齐白石的居所破旧，已不能遮风避雨。毛泽东得知后，当即安排有关部门进行修缮，并叮嘱郭沫若和艾青在第一次文代会期间对北平文艺界人士的生活情况进行调查了解。齐白石本以为登门勘察房屋的同志是来查没房产的，当得知他们是毛泽东派来为自己修缮旧居的工作人员时，大为惊讶，并深受感动。为了表达对毛泽东的敬意和感激，齐白石拿出珍藏多年的两方寿山石材，刻下一对印章，托艾青转交给毛泽东。毛泽东对两方印章颇为称赞，并意外发现用来包印章的宣纸竟然也是一幅上好的画作，他特意吩咐秘书田家英认真裱好收藏，随后主席又专程派田家英登门邀请齐白石老人来中南海做客。齐白石应邀前往中南海做客，与毛泽东一见如故。宴席上，毛泽东对齐白石赠印赠画之事再次表示感谢，齐白石这才知道，自己包装印章的一张作废小画竟然也得到了毛泽东、郭沫若的青睐。尤其是宴请后与毛泽东和朱德的叙谈对齐白石大有启迪，他认识到，艺术也应该与时俱进，加入时代精神，反映时代愿望。齐白石的儿子齐良元带病从湖南来京探望父亲，不久后病逝，齐白石深感悲痛。而此时，从朝鲜战场也传来了毛岸英牺牲的消息，毛泽东将悲痛深掩，继续投身国事。新中国成立后百废待兴，受火热的生活感染，齐白石从悲痛中解脱出来，重新投入艺术创作中。新中国成立前后的一年间，齐白石出席了首届中华全国文学艺术界代表大会；1949年7月21日，齐白石以无党派人士身份出席中国人民政治协商会议；10月1日，他又应邀出席“开国大典”，亲历了新中国的成立。一连串的社会和政治活动让齐白石看到了一个新的社会正在呈现。尤其是跟毛泽东之间的交往让齐白石的艺术感悟进入到一个新的境界，其画作也别开新境，象征着和平和友谊的和平鸽在他的笔下应运而生，他也积极投身于人类和平事业当中，并获得国际和平奖。齐白石与毛泽东只有一面之交，却碰撞出令人炫目的火花，那是艺术与政治的火花，也是两位旷世之才的心灵火花。这两位湖湘巨子的交往在史上留下了一段佳话。
