剧情梗概：
本片描写的是罗马帝国逐步走向灭亡的过程。罗马皇帝晚年时决定将王位传给贤臣利比亚斯，而不是传给王子康莫德斯，因而被毒死。利比亚斯并没有作罗马的皇帝，而是辅佐自己的好友康莫德斯登上皇位，但却引来皇帝的记恨，于是派他去守边疆。新皇帝登位，治国无术，残暴不仁，因为赠税问题引起各联邦群的反抗，而带头的正是姐姐露西拉公主。新皇帝派遣利比亚斯去征讨，利比亚斯面对着爱人，却依然选择了忠君，但是皇帝却抓住了他与公主准备烧死他们。利比亚斯最后终于杀死了这个昏君，带着公主远离皇室而去。自此，罗马帝国逐渐走向灭亡……花絮：著名导演安东尼·曼恩以恢弘的气势和史诗般的手法，再现了罗马政坛波澜壮阔的风云场面。其曲折的故事情节，尖锐的戏剧冲突，再加上索菲亚·罗兰与斯蒂芬·博依德的出色演技，使这部影片与《宾虚》（1959年）和《角斗士》（2000年）并称为描写古罗马帝国的“三大史诗巨片”。

The film describes the process of gradually destroying the Roman Empire. In his later years, the Roman emperor decided to pass the throne to the virgin ministers Libias, instead of being passed on to the prince Conmodes, and was poisoned. Libias did not do the emperor of Rome. Instead, he assisted his friend Conommer to enter the throne, but attracted the hatred of the emperor, so he sent him to defend the border.
