剧情梗概：
农村青年罗经伦为了实现自己幼时的理想成为一名歌剧演唱家只身来到理想的家园——北京。在北京胡同的小四合院里罗经伦遇见了同样是来北京寻梦的几名外地青年海明威，老毕。他们每个人都和罗经伦一样为了实现自己的理想在北京奋斗着。为了学歌剧，罗经伦一边在音乐学院偷听，一边艰难的打着工。一个偶然的机会，罗经伦认识了音乐学院的王小凡老师，王老师给他介绍了一个做摄影模特的工作。在一次拍摄中，罗经伦遇见了和他住同院的女孩蓉蓉，很快罗经伦爱上了这个漂亮的女孩。同时蓉蓉也对这个真诚，憨厚的农村青年产生了好感。一次，罗经伦为了保护一位街头卖唱者遭到几个人的围攻，蓉蓉为了救罗经伦用酒瓶子砸了其中的一个围攻者，刹时，众人被蓉蓉的举动惊呆了，罗经伦趁机拉起蓉蓉飞快得逃走了。在一场惊心动魄的奔跑过后，两人紧紧的拥抱在一起。罗经伦的努力终于得到了回报他考上了音乐学院。老毕经过八年的艰苦奋斗也搬出了四合院住进了自己买的新房，海明威还在继续执着着自己的作家梦。蓉蓉终于被一个剧组选上做了演员，当罗经伦坐着长途车去看蓉蓉的时候，蓉蓉却向他提出了分手。罗经伦失望的回到了自己胡同中的小屋，正当他悲伤难过的时候，海明威的屋里着火了，罗经伦奋力把海明威救了出来，但是海明威的小说却全被烧毁了。海明威也失望了，拖着烧伤的胳膊坐上了回家的火车。空荡荡的院子里，罗经伦感到了一丝凄凉。这时房东大爷让他参加一场街道组织的演出。就在罗经伦准备上场演出的时候，他在人群中发现了蓉蓉，一番追寻过后，他还是与蓉蓉擦肩而过。失望的罗经伦回到了四合院，房东大爷交给他一封蓉蓉写给他的信。信中蓉蓉告诉罗经伦要坚持自己的理想，并相信他一定会成功！罗经伦哭了，不知道是心酸还是幸福！夜晚的小院寂静空荡，罗经伦登上戏台唱起了他最喜欢的那首《波希米亚人》。
