Joanna Lumley's Silk Road Adventure (ITV)
General Information:
Travel Documentary hosted by Joanna Lumley, published by ITV in 2018- English narration
Information
Joanna Lumley embarks on a 7000-mile journey following the route of the legendary Silk Road, that throughout history helped spread all manner of foods, inventions and cultures across Asia and Europe...my most adventurous and exotic journey yet.
This epic new four-part series is Joanna Lumley's grandest and most challenging journey yet, a breath-taking odyssey from Venice to the Chinese border along the veins of the ancient Silk Road.
A perilous network of paths, the Silk Road shaped the modern world, bringing silk, printing, spices, gunpowder, and many other things, to the West. Joanna’s adventure will see her travel through a breath-taking array of fabulous landscapes as she crosses continents, deserts, mountains and steppe, boldly following in the footsteps of the merchants, conquerors, kings and pilgrims who once lived and died along this route.
Part 1
Joanna begins her epic Silk Road adventure: journeying thousands of miles across eight countries. Starting in Venice she sees how the travels of Venetian hero Marco Polo and Silk Road traders influenced the growth of the small island state.
Part 2
Joanna follows the Silk Road from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, and across the post-Soviet states of Georgia and Azerbaijan. From the brash, booming seaside resort of Batumi, on Georgia's Black Sea, Joanna travels across the heart of the Caucasus region; through stunning mountain settlements, romantic Silk Road cities, vineyards, and finally the uber-modern city of Baku, the capital of oil-rich Azerbaijan.
Part 3
Joanna's Silk Road journey takes her to Iran. Throughout the country she meets people eager to share the culture and innovations of the Persian civilisation which, thanks to the Silk Road, spread far beyond modern-day Iran. From ancient water gardens created to be paradise on Earth, through desert cities, endless bazaars and majestic mosques, to Zoroastrianism and Yazd's wind towers, an early form of air conditioning, Joanna discovers a country brimming with hospitality and warmth.
Part 4
As Joanna's Silk Road Adventure draws to a close, she travels across the stunning yet little-known Central Asian states of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Starting in the Kyzl-Kum desert she explores the Silk Road citadel of Khiva, a town infamous for its history of slavery. In the capital, Tashkent, she marvels at the splendid Soviet-built Metro system and attends a high society wedding as the guest of a famous pop star.
